The house we stayed in was awesome. The beach was a block away. I read a book. Drank two bottles of wine. Ran a few miles. Caught some fish. Ate really good food. And really enjoyed the time with my boys.
Memorial Day weekend we finally went. I felt like Harvey was old enough to enjoy the experience. I was right, he loved it. I don't think the trip could have been better. It was 70s in the day. And high 40s, low 50s at night. No bugs! Our site was spacious and right on the lake. It was perfect for the canoe. We will camp again, when the summer passes. And hopefully this experience wasn't so good that all other will pale in comparison. All the photos were taken with the iPhone.
I love how the sun comes up from that direction too. I was standing on the back deck but if I go all the way back and through the gate there is a clearing before the trees in the background. I think having the ground with the fog would anchor the trees more. Here it is.
My grandma and grandpa had them in their yard when I was little. When they passed away, before the house sold, my dad dug them up. They still grow and bloom at his house, my childhood home, today.

A hydrangea was one of the first plants I purchased when we bought our first home. I have a few more and even a tree version. It's a PeeGee Hydrangea Tree. It blooms every year in the summer and I leave those blooms alone until the spring. It's nice to see the the delicate flowers in the winter even though they have turned brown.

Here we go again. Another post that includes my favorites from the previous year. Time goes by so fast and that is probably the best reason to take photos. Quite often I pull photos off my camera and see something I *forgot*. Something that jogs my memory of a very simple moment that might otherwise be forgotten. Thank you, Ashley Sisk for hosting Memories, Dreams, and Reflections 2012.

It's even more exciting with Harvey. This year Harvey knows Christmas. He can tell you the story of baby Jesus and he knows Santa brings him presents if he behaves. But it was really difficult for him to understand the difference between Christmas time (the decorations and the music and parties and seeing lights and shopping and wrapping and lots of cookies) and the actual day of Christmas when Santa comes. These are some of our Christmas time photos.
Mom and I took Harvey to the Christmas Tree lot to look at trees and get some pictures. They had names for each tree along with the price on the tags. He had fun finding the tags and having us tell him the tree's name.
Lucky us, we had free tickets this season. It was so much fun. Lunch was wonderful and getting there early makes all the difference.

I remember when photography was new to me. It started on the baby forum, The Bump. Then moved over to SPN. I bought a camera, read a ton, learned a lot, applied a little, bought more stuff, started a blog - then a new "hobby" came along. This new interest came from SPN biggest loser group where we would take photos of the scale each week as we strive towards a healthier weight. Diet and exercise, specifically running and chocolate in moderation is my new thing. I spend time at RWOL and I plan my runs with my weight training and yoga. Some times I food journal and count calories. I have more energy. I feel good. And I'm looking better. It's my new thing and photography seems to be forgotten.

So, today I check my blog feed to see if Reality Steve has posted the latest on The Bachelor and I see Ashley Sisk's sneak peak of an adorable little boy. That leads me to Memories, Dreams, and Reflections. I remember last year how excited and proud I was to participate in that challenge. I remember how much fun photography can be. To pick up the camera. To document my family and the beauty around me in photographs. I find myself feeling those old feelings and missing this community. I updated my blog pages, started this entry, and feel hopeful that this challenge will push me towards the love and excitement of photography once again.

It's the bottom of the line and I went that way because I thought it would be easier to justify going from a XS to a 50D or 60D than going from a T1i to a 50D or 60D. Not to mention $500 is a lot of money to begin with. So after a year I have the same camera body and kit lens with the 50mm f/1.8 lens. I would like my next purchase to be the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. I think I'm going to follow a bit of advice and upgrade my glass before my camera body.

To be completely honest the majority of my photography time this past year has been all about getting organized. If you know me, that shouldn't be a surprise. I feel like I have a good backup system and while I am still learning LR3, I am comfortable with the program. I've worked out things with my blogs and I think I have my work flow established. So, after a year, I feel comfortable taking a photo, editing it, backing it up to my external and SmugMug, then watermarking to show all of you on this blog.

The first month or so I did try Av and Tv along with Manual. Now I shoot in Manual only. I'm getting better at knowing what settings (speed, ISO, aperture) I need under different conditions, especially around the house.

This next year I want to really focus on the photography. I feel like I know a lot but haven't had the chance to really apply that understanding. Bottom line, I need to take more pictures!

My focus is soft more than not. First, I need to test my lenses. Then I want to try focus-recompose (I toggle all the time) and back button focusing. Besides focus I also want to work on getting better exposure and white balance in camera. And if not in camera, how to use LR3 to make the correct adjustments. I'm also interested in learning how to create black and white conversions.

I have pulled together some of my favorite photos of this past year. Thanks for looking!
I just downloaded it about an hour and a half ago. My main use for this program is cloning. LR3 doesn't have very good cloning skills so I've been doing my cloning edits in picnik. I wanted to avoid loading twice to the internet. So based on a few recommendations I gave GIMP a try. It's free by the way at gimp.org. I think it will be useful for this particular part of my processing. It's different than picnik in a good way.

I'm happy with the results however the best thing ever would have been to MOVE THE NET!
Casey was in the wedding so we spent a lot of time at the wedding site. Here are some pictures of the landscape. I really am a city girl but the scenery in the country is so much better. I'm usually stuck with power lines and street signs or not enough space to capture the photo. I love the openness of the country for my camera.
I have a theme this week - outside.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">"Outside" is the word that I hear the most on the weekends. It is accompanied by Harvey's little hand banging the door. "out side, out side, mama." He pronounces the word like it's two - out side. I wish we could spend the whole day outside but it's not quite time yet.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Today I had a whole day to myself...going on twelve hours. So I spent some time outside with my camera. It's been nice but now that I am done with this post, I'm ready for my boys to be home. All these photos were from today.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

All photos must include a child in some way. This is a photo from Harvey's first birthday on May 1, 2010. This was taken with my Sony Cybershot. I did edit in LR3.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">We ended up scraping most of the icing of the top because that was all he was eating. This cake was serious business. All photos must include a child in some way. This is Harvey (my first human child) with Julie (the first of my two beagle girls).

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Harvey has always loved our animals. We have three cats (Nigel, Owen, and Little Bit) and then the beagles, my girls (Julie and Hannah). The cats never stick around when Harvey is on the loose. Hannah only allows Harvey to get close when food is involved. But Julie seems to like the attention. She doesn't seek him out but she also doesn't mind if he pets her gently or plays with her ears. She is five so maybe too old, but I imagine her really taking to him when he is a little bit older.

This was taken last month. It was one of my first shots with the new 50mm lens at 1/100, f/3.2, and 1600. I wish the photos wasn't so grainy. When I used the luminance slider it looked rediculously plastic. I think the problem here may be the high ISO. I didn't use my lightscoop. I think I was testing out the capabilities with the lower f/stop. Here is a smaller version of the original.

All the technical stuff aside I think this photo is so sweet.
It has been very challenging to organize my photos and find a work flow. I bought Lightroom 3 on cyber Monday and waited until after Christmas to install. I'm not completely comfortable with my organization but feel good enough to start using LR3. That's why this week's entry took me a little longer. Here are this week's photos.

PS: If you have LR3 please read Scott Kelby's book. It's fantastic!
I chose a pine cone as my subject. I would LOVE to have a macro lens or even extension tubes but I don't. I recently read about creating a macro with the 50mm lens. I removed the lens from the body and flipped it around holding it as tight and steady as possible against the body. Of course you have to focus manually and it's nearly impossible to not have some camera shake. Not ideal but it was something different. Here are two photos of the macro pine cone. Both are SOOC. The first is my official entry but I wanted to share the second photo too.
I have to allow myself time to take the photo, edit the photo, and do the blog post. Picking up my camera everyday is still new to me but I am making an effort. I'm hoping the editing and blogging will get easier and quicker with time. I'm also trying to fit my life into the themes and not the themes into my life. Does that make sense? Anyway, here are this week's photos.

1. A different view - We went to the Virginia Aquarium yesterday. This is something I don't see everyday, a view under water.

2. Looking up - Another from the aquarium. This turtle was looking up out of the water.

3. Abstract - This was my last photo to collect for this week's challenge. Literally taken less than an hour ago. This is one of Harvey's books, Tickets to Ride: An Alphabetic Amusement by Mark Rogalski. I think when he gets older this book will be one of his favorites. I actually googled the title to get the author's name - Harv is in bed and I'm not going in to get the book. My search results came back with a board game that I will definitely have to check out.

4. Hair - Harvey really needs a hair cut. The top is okay but the back is out of control. There is no way we can take him after school. He is too cranky. And the children's salons are only open on Saturday not Sunday. One of these days he will get his first hair cut.
5. Half - my husband.
The theme this week is cold. Last Saturday morning we were surprised with several inches of snow. Immediately we got dressed for a drive. I really wish the railing wasn't in this photo. I'm not even doing to attempt to clone it out.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The sun was peaking out. I love how it gives light from the left of the photo but a few hours later the snow was gone.
